Tips for Filing Form N-400

When applying for U.S. citizenship through naturalization, the process begins with completing Form N-400, the Application for Naturalization, and submitting it to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). This form collects basic personal information and asks several questions about your eligibility for citizenship. Here are some important guidelines to follow when filling out the N-400:

1. Answer inapplicable questions appropriately: If a question does not apply to you, write “N/A” instead of leaving a blank space. When in doubt, consult with your lawyer.

2. Be truthful: Lying on your N-400 form can not only result in the denial of your citizenship but can also lead to serious legal problems if discovered later. In certain circumstances, your citizenship may even be revoked several years later.

3. Stay consistent: Check copies of other paperwork you may have filed with the USCIS and ensure your information matches unless your older papers contained minor errors. If questioned, be prepared to explain why your answer changed and provide evidence to show that your current response is accurate.

4. Use an extra page if necessary: Some sections may require answers that are longer than the space provided. In these cases, write “please see attachment” in the designated space and provide your answer on a separate sheet of paper, including your name, A-number, and “Attachment to Form N-400” at the top.
