Green Card Renewal (I-90)

When should I renew my Green Card?

Generally, permanent residents with a 10-year green card should apply for renewal within the 6 months before the card expires. However, you should not apply outside of the 6 months as USCIS might deny your request.

You can also apply to renew your green card after is has expired. An expired green card does not mean that you have lost your status as a lawful permanent resident. This status remains for a lifetime unless you commit a deportable crime or stay too long outside of the U.S. when you travel.

We do recommend that you plan ahead to renew your green card. Although an expired green card does not prevent you from renewing, it can cause other problems. If you are outside of the country and your card expires, you might not be able to re-enter the U.S.
